WORKSHOP WAY® Mathematics
Participants will study, practice and demonstrate the process for whole class instruction and small group activities. They will put together and learn how to integrate materials unique to the system with the math texts of their district.

What Materials will teachers use and what techniques will they learn to apply in this workshop?

The Unique Math Materials that will be used are:

  1. The Math Cut-Out Book contains manipulatives to be used with the Math Lesson Plans to enhance your existing Math program directed by your district.
  2. The Cut-Out Materials and the Lesson Plan Book which will need to be purchased.

The Math Lesson Plans and techniques that will be taught will be:

  3. Plans that quickly engage students and the five steps that encourages certain kind of human growth.
    1. Power Step
This first activity uses sixteen math number symbol cards. These cards are used every day for a week. In this step, students say each card with power, three times. If the first card is 101, they will say: “101, 101, 101”. It deepens the awareness in students that they can learn because they have learned so much already.
    2. Phrase Card Pack
The second activity uses twenty phrases on sentence strips pertaining to the vocabulary of math. An example might be the phrase, “Commutative Law”. This step has first a volunteer say the phrase and then the class repeats it once with power.
    3. Communication With A Smile The third activity allows students to handle the language of the math content. The teacher asks a math question and gives the answer at the same time. Students pass the question and answer to the student behind or next to them. At the conclusion, the class asks the teacher the question; teacher responds with the answer.
    4. New Lesson A new lesson is presented using four distinct steps so that students feel movement in knowing more and more knowledge.
      • Difference Question (Example: What is the difference between a dollar
and a nickel ? ) The teacher asks the question and volunteers offer to
respond. If the child has a wrong answer, only the teacher may give the
correct answer to maintain the dignity of the child.
      • Old Risk
Use ten content questions for review, with immediate Teacher feedback.
      • New Bit of Knowledge
The teacher develops the lesson and teaches it completely.
      • New Risk
Use ten content questions from the material just taught during the new bit
of knowledge. Students respond Yes or No on whether the statement was
part of the lesson or not. Teacher gives immediate feedback by writing on
        board.
    5. Risk Activities, Free Choice, Assignments and Six Groups
This is the Free Choice Page followed by the Math Workshop while teachers reteach in the Six Group. It is the belief of this system that it is better to develop the courage to “risk” than the need to always be right.

Workshop Way offers this class called Introduction to MATH Workshop Way that not only teaches all of the above but also helps teachers make materials to use when implementing this system. It takes at least 20 to 30 hours of instruction to learn this process.

A whole school may participate or an individual teacher may join others for a workshop.
