Grace H Pilon Convictions

by Mary Ann Dalton SSJ PhD
What would give Grace Pilon, a first grade classroom teacher most of her life, the impetus and courage to promote the WORKSHOP WAY approach she developed over 40 years? Perhaps the bits of research she compiled over the years may have helped her unabashedly to become steadfast in promoting WW as a system of human growth for education to as many teachers as would listen to her.

Moving Growth Points (PDF Document)
Excerpts from paper “Moving Growth Points: Curriculum Considerations Beyond the Standards” by Michael l. Bentley, Ed.D. Printed with permission.
The title of this paper is derived from an expression, really a metaphor, used by the innovative educator, Sr. Grace Pilon, SBS (1997), who created the WORKSHOP WAY® educational model. Her work has been compared to that of Dewey and Montessori. Pilon’s method differs radically from the traditional way of educating with its emphasis on content learning, testing and grading, and external rewards.

Printed with permission. From a paper submitted for doctoral studies at Trevecca Nazarene University
By Martha Thweatt

Grace Pilon began her teaching career in 1927. The philosophy, psychology, and even the techniques she wrote about are as relevant today as they were in that era. A comparison of her major work, The Workshop Way (Pilon, 1991), with those of contemporary writers focusing on issues of diversity and culture reveal an unmistakable challenge to the status quo.

Both teachers and students long to be successful in reading. Each of us has found some success and we long for more to help students and ourselves in our professional commitment to teaching.

Keeping the Shine on Human Nature (PDF Document)
by Mary Ann Dalton SSJ PhD
One of Grace Pilon’s most interesting ideas is to for teachers to strive to keep the shine on human nature of students. This came, I think, in large part because of an early experience in life at home.
